AMERICA’S 250: THE PRESIDENT’S CLUB
February 9th, Monday, 3:15PM - 4:15PM
Join historian, author, and teacher Peter Vermilyea to explore and discuss the life of James Abraham Garfield—one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president—through Candice Millard’s Edgard Award-winning biography The Destiny of the Republic. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, Civil War hero, renowned congressman, and reluctant presidential who took on corruption. But four months after Garfield's inauguration in 1881, he was shot in the back. Though he survived, he became the object of bitter, behind-the-scenes struggles for power—over his administration, over the nation's future, and, hauntingly, over his medical care. Meticulously researched, epic in scope, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive, The Destiny of the Republic brings alive a forgotten chapter of U.S. history. Free.

I LOVE A RAINY NIGHT: THE RHYTHM OF FOREST AMPHIBIANS
February 12th, Thursday, 7PM
Join Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies for a virtual lecture on amphibian migrations, featuring Laura Heady, a biologist with the New York State Department of Conservation’s Hudson River Estuary Program and Cornell University. Beneath the towering trees of the Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains, hunkered down in underground retreats, lives a fantastic group of amphibians. Nocturnal forest salamanders often go undetected–until they move on rainy nights in large numbers for their annual breeding migrations. Along with wood frogs, these amphibians encounter many roads that bisect their habitat, and in some places, they also encounter volunteers who lend a hand to provide safe passage. Discover the fascinating world of forest amphibians, their life histories and role in forest ecosystems, and opportunities to get involved in conservation of vernal pool-breeding amphibians. Free
